History of the Studio Building of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (formerly Semperdepot)

The former royal imperial court theater scenery depot/Semperdepot was built between 1874 and 1877 by the architects Gottfried Semper and Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer and served as a depot and production site for theater decorations and scenery and is today the Studio Building of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The only surviving commercial building by Gottfried Semper in Austria picks up on Florentine palace architecture and impresses with its rationality and clarity. Stepping through the main gate, one enters the horseshoe-shaped Prospect Court, a covered courtyard that extends over all floors and resembles an abstracted theater space. At the head end is an inserted semicircle of six ascending steps, echoing the theme of the ancient theater. From there, one can access the exhibition room EG Nord in the rear part of the building.
