A workshop by the Austrian Center for Fashion Research in collaboration with “fashion and the far right. the new complexity in style” at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna organized by Elke Gaugele and Sarah Held.

We invite you to provoke change! We are facing an almost global shift to the far-right. From a critical fashion research perspective we’ve been observing this political development also on a vestimentary level – “Fashion has been weaponized” (givhan, 2017) if this upsets you, too – this workshop gives you the opportunity to hack current cultures of hate via fashion! Let’s craft and design against fascist fashion and create visual counter narratives. Our workshop fosters a forward-thinking and future-oriented level of democratic fashion practice that aims at reducing violence, racism, hate and radicalization as a counter action to the rise of contemporary far-right extremism in many countries worldwide. Together we will work on fashion based counter strategies to contemporary authoritarianism, far-right extremism. join us, team up and collaborate! In our workshop we will fight for global and racial justice. We will be forging a bold vision: together we create hacking strategies from different positions/locations in the world. Together, we will develop various counter-strategy concepts, ranging from handmade fashion hacks to counter-images, short videos, memes, and photos, that provide information on fashion and fascism, and take counter-action against the global shift to the right.

We invite all participants (offline & online) to prepare material they want to work with. This could be: paper, pen, fabric, yarns, old clothes, pictures, smartphone – anything analogue or digital you want to deconstruct. We will draw, write, sew, embroider, cut, layer, label, perform, film, photograph & collage together against fascism.
