Colonie | Paradis
Diploma installation by William Joop, Scenography class
Last spring i had to watch my South-Pacific hometown burn from the other side of the world.
Because after over two decades of communities working together in building a fairer country, the
French Government went back to its old colonial practices and tried to diminish the rights of the
Kanak people of New Caledonia. The violent protests that followed reignited tensions, reopen
collective wounds. The people of Noumea barricaded themselves, build walls between themselves.
So I also built my own barricade, as Im trying to work out where I stand in this conflict as a white
man born on «the island closest to paradise».
