Cooking the city – artists as contingency architects

Thinking of the city as a space produced by the interaction of historically and geographically specific institutions, social relations of reproduction, practices of government, forms and media of communication and so forth (James Donald), five artistic positions, engaging tangentially with such topics in their work are being presented. Vienna becomes in this scenario merely the ‘kitchen’ where the participating artists currently live (or have lived). Its specificity is not researched directly, but the city is looked at as a representation, an “imagined environment” (James Donald), of course without denying the factors contributing to Vienna’s status as a global city (Saskia Sassen’s concept). The works presented are inter-switching perspectives and open up various pathways of reading the triangle city, space and its inhabitants (the social body), altering poetical, metaphorical views with frontal experiences of the city space as a migrant or becoming-subject or simply as a flaneur.

Artists Biographies:

Mano Krach , born in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Currently master student of Peggy Buth at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig; Diploma Degree in Fine Art 2018 at HGB Leipzig, studied expanded cinema with Clemens v. Wedemeyer in Leipzig and post conceptual studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Swarnaly Mitra Rini, born in Jamalpur, Bangladesh. Studies painting with Hans Ashley Scheirl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Art Dhaka, Bangladesh. Shuvo Rafiqul, born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Currently lives and works in Vienna. He started his career as a cricket player before he turned to sculpture, experimented with painting, made films, started to draw and became a leading member of the artist group OGCJM, stirring up the young art scene in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Shuvo was part of the 11th Shanghai Biennale, Why Not Ask Again? , curated by the Delhi-based artist group Raqs Media Collective, Power Station of Art, Shanghai 2016 and took part in Krinzinger Residencies, Hungary this summer.

Miae Son, born in Seoul/South Korea. Studied video and video installation with Dorit Margreiter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, video installation with Jean-François Guiton at the University of Arts Bremen and sculpture at the University of Seoul. Since 2018 member of Golden Pixel Cooperative (http://www.goldenpixelcoop.com/). In 2018 she recieves the FrauenFilmTage Vienna short film Award as well as the nomination for the Erste Bank MehrWERT Award and an Art_Start Studio scholarship. Alexandra Tatar, born in Dej, Romania. Currently PhD candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, on the topic of post-soviet subjectivities. MA in Fine Art from the same university received in 2016 The [physical] [impossibility] of [women] in the [world] of [someone] [living] supervised by Ashley Hans Scheirl. Studies at the University of Art and Design Cluj Napoca, Romania.
