Cranach not only depicted himself in the Vienna Holy Kinship, but also in a few other religious paintings that were commissioned by different patrons. The lecture explores the contexts of these self-portraits and also presents some possible self-portraits on woodcuts for discussion, for which there is hardly anything comparable in Renaissance printmaking.

Guido Messling (1967) is Curator of German Painting at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. He received his PhD from the FU Berlin in 2002. From 2001 to 2005 he worked at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Over the past decade he has mainly published on German Art of the 15th and 16th century and has curated exhibitions on Cranach, on expressionistic tendencies around 1500 and on the Ottoman Orient in Renaissance art. He has also recently held teaching positions at the universities of Passau and Vienna.
