The central reference point around which the concept of Marina Gržinić's exhibition was organized is the process of reassessing our perspective on the changes taking place in art and culture under the weight of migration. Irreversible.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a focal point on the 40-year journey of video-film and installation work by Marina Gržinić and Aina Šmid. This showcase not only celebrates their collaborative oeuvre, which began in 1982 and has left a profound artistic and political impact across former Yugoslavia, Slovenia, and beyond, but also introduces a fresh collaborative venture involving Marina Gržinić, Tjaša Kancler, and Jovita Pristovšek, which began in 2022.

The narrative of this newly conceptualized exhibition represents a significant milestone in the collaborative journey of four artists: Marina Gržinić, Aina Šmid, Tjaša Kancler, and Jovita Pristovšek. This new collaboration, rooted in documentary filmmaking and political activism, expands upon the artistic legacy established over four decades by Marina Gržinić and Aina Šmid. The intersection of their enduring collaboration and the emergence of this new artistic entanglement has resulted in a series of innovative projects and presentations since 2022. A notable highlight includes the premiere of the documentary film Insurgent Flows in 2023, a compelling 90-minute exploration.

It’s important to underscore that this exhibition diverges from conventional norms and highlights the diverse collaborative and insurgent political perspectives that these four artists bring to the table. DISSIDENT HISTORIES. INSURGENT FUTURITIES bridges the rich history of the past 40 years and the unfolding future of political documentary filmmaking. It encapsulates not only a retrospective reflection but also a forward-looking trajectory, envisioning the continued evolution of political discourse and visual storytelling through film.

Marina Gržinić is a doctor of philosophy and works as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Marina Gržinić has published numerous articles, essays and several books and has been a video artist in the field of political film for 40 years. She is currently leading the research project Conviviality as Potentiality (FWF AR 679) with her research team Dr. Jovita Pristovšek, Asma Aiad, BA MA, and Anahita Neghabat, MA.
