"You want to go through the main entrance? ... me too :)" Closing of the main doors by the Equal Opportunities Team

December 3 is International Day for People with Disabilities. In this context, the Equal Opportunities Team (AfG) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna has once again closed the entrance at Schillerplatz.

The reason for the action is the lack of barrier-free access through the entrance at Schillerplatz. The barrier-free entrance is currently on the side of the building in Makartgasse. "With this in mind, we call on BIG and the City of Vienna to work towards financing an appropriate measure for inclusive access for ALL through the main entrance to the academy," the Team's members inform all those who come to the academy in the morning.

The AfG action took place for the second time. On November 4, 2024, the doors of the entrance at Schillerplatz also remained closed. The reactions to the different entrance situation are mixed. It is met with a lot of understanding and support, especially among the Academy's students. However, there are also people who, despite several remarks and out of sheer disbelief, shake the doors to see if they indeed cannot take the direct route through as usual. However, the doors remained closed to those people, too.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December each year is a day of remembrance and action proclaimed by the United Nations to raise public awareness of the problems faced by people with disabilities and to promote commitment to the dignity, rights and well-being of those affected.
