Gringa_os at UEMA

Since September 2024, UEMA in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, has been a new partner university of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as part of an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility project.

In March, Ruby Sircar (Contextual Painting), Angelina Kratschanova (Head of the International Office), and two students from the Academy traveled to São Luís to introduce the Academy to UEMA’s faculty and students. They participated in workshops and guided tours. Ruby Sircar conducted a workshop for UEMA students on the topic of vernacular knowledge.

Why is it important and forward-thinking to engage in exchange with a partner university in the Global South and learn from each other? Because only together can we address questions of climate, minority rights, equality, and resource scarcity.

UEMA, the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, demonstrates this impressively through programs like Proetnos, which trains multipliers to pass on quilombola and Indigenous emancipation, independence, and knowledge to future generations.

We look forward to the start of an exchange for faculty and students to learn from and with each other.
