The Academy mourns the death of Hubert Schmalix (1952-2025)
The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna announces with great regret that Hubert Schmalix passed away in Los Angeles on March 23, 2025.
Hubert Schmalix studied painting at the Academy under Max Melcher from 1971 to 1976. Schmalix held his first solo exhibition at the Künstlerhaus Vienna in 1976. He became internationally known as an exponent of "New Painting" in the early 1980s. In 1984, Schmalix went abroad. He spent time in the Philippines, then in the USA, and in 1987 moved to Los Angeles, where he lived until his death. From 1997, he headed the painting master class as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2024, he received the Decoration of Honor of the Province of Styria for Science, Research and Art, First Class. He created his last work for the recently opened Music Pavilion of the Styria Show 2025.
Our sincere condolences go out to his family and all those left behind. We wish them strength in this sad time.
