Dear colleagues,
dear alumni,

We hope you have had a pleasant start to the new summer semester. With this newsletter edition, we would like to inform you again about various funding and submission opportunities.

Particularly, we would like to draw your attention to the current calls of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) in the field of Culture & Creativity. Short Innovation Projects, Main Innovation Projects and Continuous Professional Development Courses are being called for (deadline: April 11).

Furthermore, we would like to point out the call for Creative Europe Cooperation Projects at European funding level (deadline: May 13). Funding will be awarded for transnational cooperation between organizations in the cultural and creative sectors for small, medium-sized or large consortia.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna awards the Prize for Best Research Catalogue Exposition 2024/2025 (deadline: October 7). The next information session will take place on 25.03.2025 from 11-12h via Zoom.

In addition to a number of ongoing submission opportunities at the FWF, such as ESPRIT and PEEK, we would also like to draw your attention to the calls Top Citizen Science (deadline: April 8) and Science Communication (deadline: May 13), which can be submitted in addition to funded FWF research projects.

Lastly, we want to inform you about the Call for Abstracts for an upcoming special issue of Fashion Theory on the topic "Fashion – The Far-Right’s Weaponization of Style". (deadline: April 15)

Dear doctoral candidates,

we wish you a good start to the semester! In the following, we would like to inform you about current opportunities and events for doctoral and PhD candidates in this semester and beyond.

First of all, we want to remind you that the Call for Submissions to participate in this year's Graduate Conference closes on March 25. The conference will take place on May 15 and provides a dedicated platform to present and discuss advanced dissertation/PhD projects. We look forward to receiving many submissions. If you have any questions about the call or the Graduate Conference itself, please contact us at doktoratszentrum@akbild.ac.at.

On April 2, we cordially invite you to the Open Door Event of the Center for Doctoral Studies, where we will present our activities, grants, and offers. The event offers space for all questions relating to your doctoral studies at the Academy. Registration is not required.

As always, we are happy to support you with your funding applications. Especially for applying to the ÖAW-DOC program (deadline: September 15, 2025) we offer a Coffee Table Talk on April 28 to inform you about the program and give you first tips on how to write your submission proposal. If you have any questions beforehand, please feel free to contact us at any time.

There will be two workshops in May:

On May 13, Karin Wetschanow will lead the workshop “From Concept to Core: Writing Meaningful Exposés and Research Proposals” (in German). The workshop is aimed at doctoral candidates who are planning to write an exposé for a funding application or their Dissertation Agreement.

The workshop “Being Present with Confidence. Presence and Presentation for Phd-Students” with Ursula Reisenberger (in German and English) will take place from May 22 to 23. The practice-oriented workshop aims to strengthen participants in finding their presence even in challenging moments of public speaking.

Registration for the workshops is possible until the beginning of May – first come, first served.

Of course, our ongoing calls for funding opportunities for PhD candidates are available this semester, too (short-term stay abroad, Learning-on-the-Job fellowship, and travel allowances).

The scholarship for a short-term stay abroad for doctoral/Ph.D. candidates supports stays abroad for e.g. research, field research, archival research, interviews, which are necessary for the dissertation or the Ph.D. project. Stays abroad are funded for a minimum of two to a maximum of eight weeks.

We, therefore, ask all doctoral and PhD candidates with an approved dissertation agreement who would like to be visible as doctoral or PhD candidates on the Academy website to fill out the  application form and upload the required documents.

EU ERASMUS+ | Semester abroad

Doctoral and Ph.D. candidates of the Academy of Fine Arts have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at a partner university within the framework of Erasmus+.

EU ERASMUS+ | Short-term stay abroad

In order to better meet the different learning and training needs of doctoral students and to ensure equal opportunities, doctoral students will also have the opportunity to complete a short-term study visit abroad in Europe from the summer semester of 2022.

OeAD | Marietta Blau-Grant

  • Deadline: 1.9.2025

The Marietta Blau Grant offers financial support for six- to twelve-month study periods abroad for doctoral or PhD students of Austrian universities. It serves to optimise their dissertations. Junior researchers are the main target group.

The DOC Fellowship Programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences offers funding for highly qualified doctoral candidates in all areas of research. The fellowships are intended to allow young researchers to dedicate themselves to working in focused fashion to complete their doctoral thesis within a clear timeframe.
