Invitation to the Defense of Iris Julian
The Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna kindly invites you to the defense of Iris Julian's dissertation project Modes of Collaboration. In Dance, Performance and Visual Arts.
The Examination Panel is made up of: Prof. Dr. Carolin Bohlmann (chair), Prof. Dr. Sabeth Buchmann (1st supervisor), Prof. Dr. Ruth Sonderegger (2nd supervisor), and Prof. Dr. Siegmund Gerald (external appraiser, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen).
In this dissertation project, Julian examines contemporary dance and performance projects that have been realised in the independent theatre scene based in Europe. Instead of the traditional working scheme based on a choreographer passing movement patterns, rhythm and spatial structures to the dancers, cooperation and thus authorship was distributed within the groups. Accordingly, experimentation with artistic procedures and methods for the diffusion and collectivisation of creative processes is common characteristic of the works.
The analysis of the projects, being beyond clear working structures, turned out to be a challenge that was encountered by splitting the research perspective into philosophy, sociology, theatre and dance studies and art history.
Iris Julian:
works as a theoretician and an artist at the interface of cultural studies, performance arts, and choreography (both in practice and theory). In 2019 she became an associate scientific member of the research group Mediale Teilhabe with its headquarters at the University of Konstanz, in cooperation with the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Zurich University of the Arts, and University of Hamburg. For her PhD she received grants from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (2020) and the Stadt Wien Wissenschafts- und Forschungsförderung: MA7 (in 2019 and 2020).
