The Examination Panel is made up of: Katja Sterflinger (chair), Elke Krasny (supervisor), and Carolin Bohlmann (external appraiser).
Abstract
The dissertation examines practices of cultural and knowledge transmission of craft knowledge, which can be understood as tacit or implicit knowledge, using the example of ceramics in the context of museums and exhibitions. It follows epistemological discourses on knowledge hierarchies and power relations, as These are also reflected in the exhibition and mediation practices of museums. The work challenges the hierarchies of intellectual and physical, explicit and implicit, as well as situated forms of knowledge, demonstrating how one-dimensional narratives in the context of exhibitions can be expanded through multimodal narrative forms. Additionally, the methodological challenges are addressed, which arise not only in the mediation of tacit, craft knowledge but also in the collection of empirical data or the documentation and analysis of elusive, tacit knowledge. Finally, it highlights the tools and strategies with which these challenges can be overcome and how new approaches have been found to make tacit knowledge accessible and audible.
