Daniel Richter
Screening of the film DANIEL RICHTER and following talk with Daniel Richter and Johan F. Hartle, Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. An event of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and FILMLADEN.
A cinematic intermezzo with two parrots, abstract-figurative painting and a camera.
Daniel Richter, former punk from Hamburg's squatter scene, is now a star of the international art scene. His paintings are bought, collected and traded all over the world. But at heart he is a rebel, a deeply political person. Oscar®-winning director Pepe Danquart followed Richter over a period of three years, recording his artistic development, celebrating his major exhibitions in New York and Paris with him and observing him in his studio: painting, listening to music, reflecting. The result is a film about art that wants to be political and yet remains in the best sense of the word what it is: painting!
Pepe Danquart's exciting documentary about the celebrated contemporary artist is far more than a classic portrait or a homage to the work of Daniel Richter. It explores the question of how political a famous painter can actually be in an environment of the turbo-capitalist art market and how the social rejection of the punk of the 1980s finds its way into his painting today.
