University professorship § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 at the Institute for Art and Architecture
The following position at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is advertised:
University professorship
in accordance with § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for Architectural Design at the Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA). This full-time professorship is offered for a period of five years, starting on 1 October 2023.
The architectural education at the IKA is based on an interacting structure of five platforms, each dedicated to a specific focus. These five platforms are: Analogue Digital Production (ADP), Structural Materials Technology (CMT), Ecology Sustainability Cultural Heritage (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscapes Cities (GLC).
The open position is located within the platform Analogue Digital Production (ADP).
We are looking for a person who has set international standards through their experimental work in the field of architecture and who has helped shape the discourse on analog and digital architectural production and its methods. Applicants are expected to represent the topic of Analogue Digital Production in its diversity and, applied to theory and practice, to critically reflect on technological developments in the field and their far-reaching social implications.
Applicants should understand the platform as a design-oriented setting of architectural education, where the complexity of contemporary architecture and its changing fields of activity are taught and artistic, experimental and technical competence can be acquired. Applicants are invited to formulate their views on the role of analog and digital tools and methods in architectural production and their impact on existing and future concepts of space as part of their application (for example the impact of virtual spaces or artificial intelligence).
Central to the application are the articulation of focal points, orientation and future perspectives for the platform for Analogue Digital Production at the Institute of Art and Architecture, as well as the presentation of a teaching and research concept which may include a description of necessary equipment.
Applicants must have sufficient university teaching and practical experience to teach and research the complex topics related to analog and digital production in relation to theory, architectural design, and possible implementations. Networking with similarly oriented research groups within and outside academia is expected in order to relate all relevant fields of knowledge, from technical to artistic practice.
This professorship includes teaching obligations such as design studios and courses, as well as research and administration.
Conditions of employment
- qualification as an architect with a completed Austrian or equivalent international university degree or proof of an equivalent academic qualification corresponding to the application
- proof of an internationally recognized highly qualified and experimental practice in design and/or construction outside the academic field or proof of corresponding scientific or artistic work in the field
- university teaching experience in the field of analog and digital production, including teaching of architectural design
- willingness to take on organizational tasks, both in academic self-administration (e.g. in committees) and in matters of the study program
- high degree of teamwork and cooperation skills
- excellent knowledge of English and/or German
- gender and discrimination critical competence or willingness to actively acquire and broaden these skills
The teaching commitment includes at least 14 hours per week.
The monthly gross salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in salary group A1 for full-time employment is currently Euro 5.437,7.
In addition to teaching and research concepts as well as the articulation of focal points and orientation of the platform for Analogue Digital Production at the Institute of Art and Architecture, the application must include a detailed CV, the presentation of own projects, as well as descriptions of previous courses with exemplary student work. For applications in German, English summaries of essential parts of the application documents are required.
