the_print_fest - Day 2
the_print_fest is an open format to enable art related education, tacit- and peer-learning experiences, and awareness of the divers works of cultural and artistic practices, in an open access setting.
Feel invited to join the second print fest, taking place at the print studio S13 of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. the_print_fest continues as a series of events in which new teaching content is playfully illuminated and conveyed, and sensitised to a wide variety of concepts and materialities.
Program 6.5.2024
10–20 h: Inner yard at Schillerplatz: large-format linocuts in production by students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the Art University Linz, the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts Budapest MKE; joint cutting with guests is possible on the 1x2 meter large panel of the festival, after individual introduction to the techniques of cutting. Interactive pen-plotter installation with Liz Melchor. Festive closure towards the end of the day.
14–16 h: Lectures
1. Andreas Pirchner - Towards the unknown in art: generative approaches
This talk addresses approaches to generative artistic practices by understanding art as a process allowing for the involvement of human and non-human (technological) agents. By distinguishing algorithmic methods from machine learning strategies and by differentiating hierarchies in co-creation processes between humans and machines, means and ways of generative approaches for encountering novelty are discussed.
Andreas Pirchner explores contemporary audiovisual artistic practices at the intersection of art, technology, and science. He has authored papers and essays on theoretical and practical approaches to generative and algorithmic forms of art, was key researcher at the FWF-funded project “Gamified Audiovisual Performance and Performance Practice” and co-published the two-volume book “Ludified!”. Andreas received his PhD from the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustic Graz, where he teaches audiovisual design.
2. Daniela Kröhnert - Analogue Algorithmic Aesthetics
The talk aims to give a condensed history of programming through the female lens, highlighting significant roles women played in shaping today's ubiquitous technology, the computer. Additionally, it discusses how self-built drawing robots, computer algorithms, and artistic practice can intersect, along with their application in helping architecture students rediscover the physical drawing.
Daniela Kröhnert is an architectural researcher and artist specialized in digital fabrication. She is currently teaching at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and responsible for the digital production lab at the Institute of Architecture and founding member of the artist collective "the She Machine". In her private practice "DARK", she follows her love for CNC
technologies, the entanglement of digital and physical realms, and her passion for computational drawing and pen plotting.
3. Liz Melchor- Me, The Robot, and Our Interaction: The Agency of the Artist When Technology is the Tool.
When an artist uses drawing robots and computers to create work, where does their agency lie? Liz Melchor will use an exploration of her own personal process with pen plotters, including her generative use of both computer code and materials, to open up a discussion of how the artist interacts with technology to make art. The talk will address common objections to artists utilizing robots and computers, and offer both historical answers and future possibilities to explore this wide question.
Liz Melchor is an artist and pen plotter from San Francisco, California, living in Vienna. A messy and gestural drawer with her hands, she loves the problem a drawing robot presents: how to find the unpredictable with such a predictable machine. She is active in generative art and pen plotter communities and is a founding member of the new artist collective, The She Machine.
