Hugo Canoilas is mentor of Elisa Bergmann.
Hugo Canoilas, * 1977 in Lisbon, lives and works in Vienna. He has a degree in Fine Arts from ESAD in Caldas da Rainha and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London.
Recent solo shows of his work include Phantasmagoria at C.A.V. in Coimbra; Sculptured in Darkness at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; Buyoant at Martin Janda Gallery, Vienna; On the Extremes of Good and Evil, at mumok, Vienna; Cnidarian Polips Repaired by the Eye of the Observer, at Serralves Museum, Porto. Canoilas has contributed with his work to institutional exhibitions such as Kunstverein in Hamburg, in Hamburg, De Appel in Amsterdam; Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, Salzburger Kunstverein in Salzburg; 30th São Paulo Biennial, in SãoPaulo, 4th Ural Industrial Biennial, in Yekaterinburg, and the Vienna Biennale For Change, in Vienna.
In 2020, he received the Kapsch Contemporary Art prize in Austria, awarded by mumok - the museum of modern and contemporary art in Vienna. Canoilas is currently developing the opera Hold Your Breath, in collaboration with Éna Brennan and David Pountney, organized by Kunsthaus Bregenz and Bregenzer Festspiele.
