In her installations, Julie Galsbo focuses on remains of everyday life such as dust and dirt, both exploring the remains themselves and the action involved in disposing them. Her works are often site-specific, relating to remains present in the exhibition space. Yet, they also concern issues in society. In her work “Fountain", dirty washing water from the exhibition floor is being recycled in a bucket as a fountain. The work comments on cleaning as necessary everywhere – also in an exhibition space.

Cleaning is moreover an interesting everyday routine, in part because it is intertwined with social, ethnic and gender-related distinctions in our society and in part because it is linked to a number of psychoanalytic discourses in the daily waste disposal. Galsbo also works with dust merely focusing on the material itself. For instance in “Returning,” which is simply dust and dirt from the dustbag of an exhibition space tipped in a corner. The dust is returned to where it comes from. Dust arises everywhere, but the composition is different depending on its origins. It has been brought inside by the wind and by people passing by. Excretions from our bodies appear as private human traces that intervene with the surroundings. (JG, EL)
