The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna intends to appoint following position at the Austrian Centre for Fashion Research (ACfFR)

Senior Researcher/PostDoc in Fashion Research/Fashion Studies
with an employment scale of 16h/week limited from 1st September 2018 to 30th June 2020.

The Austrian Centre for Fashion Research is an interdisciplinary research centre that aims at establishing an internationally competitive research infrastructure in the realm of fashion studies, based on critical cultural studies and art theory as well as on practice-based and practice-oriented research approaches in fashion. The main topics of research are fashion and politics, migration and decolonization in the system of fashion, fashions and technologies. It develops synergies in research and teaching between the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Art University Linz and other Austrian universities and cultural institutions.

The job description entails the conceptual development and organization of a practice-led conference and workshops, editorial work and the contribution to external research funding proposals for the Austrian Centre for Fashion Research.

Requirements for application:

  • The successful candidate will have an excellent PhD in one of the relevant subjects (fashion studies, sociology, cultural studies, art history)
  • Excellent working knowledge and research experience (proof of international and peer-reviewed publications) in the field of fashion research / fashion studies, preferably within recent discourses of fashion theory, cultural studies, fashion sociology, postcolonial studies, art history, and critical theory
  • Approved knowledge in the subjects of fashion and politics, migration and decolonization in the fashion system, fashion&techologies
  • Knowledge of practice-based research processes and design theories, as well as an interest in, and commitment to, working in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Competences in science management and in the application for third party funded research projects as well as in the organization of workshops/symposiums and the publishing of academic publications
  • Proposal for a research project in the field of fashion research (max. 5 pages)
  • Excellent German and English skills

  • Expertise in Critical Fashion Studies, Cultural Studies, Art History, Modesoziology, Fashion Theory, Postcolonial Theory, Gender and Globalization Theory
  • Excellent coordinating, communicative, organizational and editorial skills as well as competence in the development and management of third-party funded research grants
  • Self-reliance, flexibility and teamwork
  • Very good computer skills, including graphics and layout


The monthly gross salary according to the collective wage agreement for the employees of the universities in salary group B1 (Post-Doc) is currently Euro 3,711.1 at full employment.
