The following position at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is advertised:

University professorship 

in accordance with § 99 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for Gender and Space / Design at the Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA). This professorship is offered for 32 hours per week for a period of two years, starting on 1 October 2024. 

The IKA offers two fields of study: Architecture and Scenography. 

The architectural education (BA and MA) is based on an interacting structure of five platforms, each dedicated to a specific focus. These five platforms are: Analogue Digital Production (ADP), Structural Materials Technology (CMT), Ecology Sustainability Cultural Heritage (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscapes Cities (GLC). 

Scenography is a four-year diploma course dealing with the staging of spaces. Temporary spaces for theater, opera, performance and public areas are developed in project-based classes. 

The courses of the advertised professorship are open to students of all fields of study offered at the Academy. 

The advertised position addresses people whose artistic practice, experimental work or theoretical research has dealt with intersections in the fields of spatial production and/or spatial staging as well as architecture and/or scenography with special reference to the subject area of gender and space and who have helped shape the discourse of critical spatial practice internationally. 

Conditions of employment 

  • an Austrian or equivalent international university degree appropriate to the position or equivalent artistic aptitude
  • proof of an internationally recognized outstanding architectural, artistic or artistic-scientific (design) practice as well as corresponding artistic or artistic-scientific achievements
  • proof of teaching experience in the field of architecture, scenography or art
  • expertise in the field of critical spatial practice or theoretical and/or practical engagement with the topic/discourse field of gender and space, e.g. in public and social space, as well as the ability to transmit this expertise in theoretical reflection
  • submission of a teaching concept on the motivation, contents and intentions of artistic/ artistic-scientific teaching in the field of gender and space
  • very good knowledge of English and/or German
  • general anti-discriminatory understanding and the willingness to further improve these skills

The teaching commitment includes project-oriented work, individual artistic teaching, lectures and exercises of at least 12 hours per week. 

For selected candidates a public hearing will take place as part of the application process. 

The monthly gross salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in salary group A1 is currently Euro 5.090,- for 32 hours per week.
