The following position at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is advertised:

University Professorship

in accordance with § 99 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) for „Transgender Studies” at the Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies (IKW) of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. This full-time employment starts 1 December 2024 and is limited until 30 April 2025.

The Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies offers an impulse professorship in the field of transgender studies with a focus on current theory formation with regard to art and cultural production. The impulse professorship is intended to provide space for current topics, contemporary research approaches, experimental methods and their communication, complementing the existing curriculum and aiming at the entire Academy in the further development of research and discourse across the institutes.

The advertised position addresses internationally renowned candidates from the humanities and social sciences and/or the arts and cultural studies with expertise in trans* studies, queer and trans* theories and their interconnections with current (pop) cultural and/or artistic practices through an intersectional approach.

Responsibilities include teaching and research.

Conditions of employment

  • an Austrian or international university degree appropriate to the position, a relevant doctorate and habilitation (or achievements equivalent to habilitation)
  • outstanding academic qualification for the subject to be filled (according to the profile description above)
  • a distinguished research profile (relevant international publications, conference contributions, etc.)
  • pedagogical and didactical competences as well as several years of teaching experience, preferably in higher education
  • competence in the discursive development and reflection of “transgender studies” with regard to art and cultural production within the framework of the Academy's research and teaching activities
  • willingness to cooperate closely with colleagues at the IKW as well as staff and students in other institutes
  • very good knowledge of German and/or English
  • general anti-discriminatory understanding and the willingness to further improve these skills

Desired qualifications

  • relevant international networks as well as non-academic practice
  • knowledge of current (pop) cultural and/or artistic forms of practice and their discourses

Teaching responsibilities include courses of at least 8 hours per week.

The monthly gross salary according to the collective agreement for university employees in salary group A1 is currently Euro 6.362,5.

The application must comprise a written concept for the positioning and further development of the focus “transgender studies”, including a teaching concept (max. 3 pages, seminar and lecture), a letter of motivation as well as a CV including research projects and list of publications.
